The result of a joint venture between Credit Union Central of Alberta and Credit Union Central of Saskatchewan, CUPS Payment Services was formed in 1996 and has since grown to a staff of about 170. CUPS Payment Services provides cost effective, 24/7 payment services to a continually growing client base consisting of credit unions, corporate clients, and others in the financial industry. “We want to aid in helping credit unions to be as efficient as possible, providing them and their members with easier access to their information,” says Judy Hammond, Assistant Vice President, CUPS Payment Services. Popular services for the credit union clients include cheque imaging, which CUPS offers to its clients through an ASP model.
As credit unions discovered how well the ASP model works for them, they began looking for other services that they could use in the same way. At the same time, DOXIM was talking to credit unions about their interest in services like document imaging and e-presentment. Some credit unions even came to CUPS Payment Services asking for a document imaging service. “[DOXIM] created interest in document imaging amongst some of the credit unions and stirred the market for us. They were pivotal in our understanding of the interest in the market,” says Hammond.
Due to the demand for additional services, CUPS elected to do an RFI with 6 vendors from Canada and the United States in order to get an understanding of what was available in the industry. Because CUPS supports a variety of different credit unions on various banking systems, any solution that CUPS might select would have to be able to interface easily with the various banking platforms. The solution also had to be cost-effective, in keeping with the other services that CUPS provides.
The review, which included CUPS and a small group of credit unions, resulted in the selection of DOXIM ECM by DOXIM. Hammond says that DOXIM was selected because, “they were price effective, had significant credit union experience, and allowed the credit union to have control over how they would use the product. They also had the functionality that the credit unions needed, and helped them to reduce printing and mailing costs with the e-statement option.” DOXIM was not only able to meet the selection criteria of the review group, DOXIM ECM included an additional capability that increased the value of the entire offering to CUPS credit union clients.
Since the conclusion of the RFI and RFP processes, CUPS has launched a pilot project with one of its customers, Affinity Credit Union. While CUPS is in the process of building the architecture it needs in its data centre, DOXIM is running the pilot at its site in Markham. The people at Affinity have been very happy so far with DOXIM ECM, because they have complete control over indexing, administration, and access – it is a solution that fits their model, not one they have to adjust to in order to use.
Within 2007-2008, CUPS plans to roll out DOXIM ECM to about 25 customer credit unions. “There is a lot of interest in the new service, and I think it’s going to exceed our business case,” says Hammond. In addition to rolling out to customers, CUPS plans to deploy and use DOXIM ECM internally. “We will use the product as much as we can internally, because we really see the efficiencies it’s going to bring us,” says Hammond. CUPS will use DOXIM ECM internally for content management – particularly in managing agreements and third party correspondence.
CUPS Payment Services has been committed to delivering affordable services to its customer credit unions to help them provide better member service. When CUPS saw the demand from its customers for additional document imaging services, a proper review process was launched to ensure that CUPS and its customers were getting the best solution that they could find to deliver those services in a cost effective manner. That process resulted in the selection of DOXIM ECM, which Hammond of CUPS believes to have been the best choice for everyone. Hammond says, “We see this as a huge benefit for our customers. It provides another service our customers that allows them to gain efficiencies, reduce costs and enhance their membership experience.”
